Why Do I Still Feel Broken as a Christian?

By Mey Deras | Est. Reading Time 4 mins.

If you’ve ever whispered, “Why do I still feel so broken even though I’m a Christian?,” you’re not alone. Many believers quietly wrestle with this question. You love Jesus. You read your Bible. You pray. And yet, deep down, there’s pain, weakness, or sorrow that feels unshakable.

The good news? The Bible doesn’t ignore this tension. Instead, it shows us how to face our brokenness with honesty, hope, and gospel truth.

Here are 5 biblical reasons you may still feel broken, and how God calls you to respond.

1. Brokenness Is Normal in a Fallen World

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18

Why you still feel broken:
Pastor Kevin Carson reminds us that change begins with honesty. We live in a world shattered by sin, and pain is part of that reality. Your brokenness is not failure, it’s evidence that you’re human in a fallen world.

What you can do:

  • Stop labeling yourself a “bad Christian” for hurting.
  • Bring your broken heart before the Lord daily. He welcomes your weakness. He won’t get tired of you pleading for help.
  • Be cautious to not let pain distort your view of God. Long periods of sorrow may tempt us to feel that God doesn’t care. Choose to anchor your soul in the truth that He is Good!

2. Healing Is a Process, Not Instant

“God’s grace meets you where you are, but it never leaves you where it found you.” Paul Tripp

Why you still feel broken:
Author Elyse Fitzpatrick warns that we often forget to apply the gospel in everyday struggles. We expect salvation to erase pain, but sanctification is a process. Growth takes time, and God uses brokenness as a tool to shape you into Christ’s image.

What you can do:

  • Expect progress, not perfection.
  • Write down one area where you’ve seen even small growth in the past year. Celebrate it.

3. Your Heart Battles Competing Desires

“What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?” James 4:1

Why you still feel broken:
In Biblical counseling we teach that the heart is a worship factory. We often chase validation, comfort, control, or approval instead of Christ. That tug-of-war leaves us weary and unsettled.

What you can do:

  • Ask yourself: “What do I want more than Christ right now?”
  • Choose to believe that Christ is enough. He’s your only source of satisfaction, memorize Psalm 90:14
  • Replace that desire with a truth-filled Scripture. Example: When craving control, pray Proverbs 3:5–6.

4. God Meets You in Your Weakness

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

Why you still feel broken:
Healing isn’t found by denying pain, or pretending all is well while quietly broken. But by leaning into God’s presence in it. Don’t let your weakness be wasted, it’s where His strength shines most clearly.

What you can do:

  • When you feel overwhelmed, whisper: “Lord, I need Your strength right now.” Run to Him when you are tempted to fix it yourself. Go to Him when you want to hide and let God fix it without taking your responsibility.
  • Memorize 2 Corinthians 12:9 as a lifeline.

5. Wholeness Is Promised, Not Yet Fully Experienced

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Why you still feel broken:
You are already made new in Christ. However, you are not yet free from the presence of sin. You also continue to suffer from this world. That full healing awaits when Jesus returns. Revelation 21:4.

What you can do:

  • Anchor your hope in eternity, not just today’s feelings.
  • When brokenness weighs heavy, journal one way you long for heaven’s wholeness.

Final Encouragement

Yes, you may still feel broken. But feelings are not the final word. In Christ, you are loved, redeemed, and being transformed, even if slowly. God is not disappointed of your weakness; He is using it to showcase His grace.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which of these 5 truths do you most need to apply today?
  2. Where can you trace even small steps of God’s healing in your life?
  3. Who can walk with you as you learn to see your brokenness through the eyes of your Redeemer?
